This is a unique expression of Thai coffee from producer Jaroon and it's one of my first times tasting a Red Honey Gesha produced in this region! I taste: Lemongrass, Light Chrysanthemum Florals, Citrus, and the signature Thai Black Milk Tea terroir note. If you have never tasted Gesha from Thailand, I would describe it to have a higher level of florality as well a more delicate acidity (lemongrass/citrus) expression compared to other varietals. When cooled, you get the Thailand terroir presentation which is a nice creaminess and sweet finish alongside the light florals.
For best results, I recommend you rest this coffee for at least 3+ weeks!
From Pack:
Khun Lao in Chiang Mai is known for producing some of Thailand’s finest coffees. Nestled within a lush forest, the coffee trees grow tall and resilient under a naturally shaded canopy, creating an ideal environment for cultivating exceptional quality.
Jaroon has been exploring and working with a range of coffee varietals, and one of the most exciting and limited among them is Sunda Gesha. This varietal traces back to an old Typica lineage discovered deep within the forests of Indonesia, known for expressing characteristics similar to Gesha. In Thailand, it is referred to as SCATH01, which stands for Specialty Coffee Association Thailand 01. It is a delicate and challenging varietal to grow, requiring great care and attention from farmers, but when nurtured well, it often reveals elegant floral notes such as jasmine and soft white florals in the cup.
I had the chance to meet Jaroon after the COVID 19 pandemic, and getting to know him has truly been a blessing. He is a farmer deeply devoted to his craft. Coffee is not just his work, but a journey that has shaped his life. One of the things I admire most about him is his genuine, warm smile, which reflects both his passion and the pride he takes in what he does.
